Optimizing HV Capacitor Bank Design, Protection, and Testing
This paper will discuss in detail a utility case study of the redesign and optimization of a HV capacitor bank protection and control scheme used on multi-stack cap bank applications >100kV. This redesign uses switchable stacks for optimized grid operations and this approach could also apply to medium voltage DA or DER areas. Details include its operational philosophy, engineering, implementation, and type testing on the advanced IED used for the advanced protection and control functions. The paper also provides recommended field testing and troubleshooting methods depending on the cap bank configuration chosen.
