Utilizing the IEC 61850 Process Bus Architecture for Robust Protection Functionality in Digital Substations
This paper discusses how National Grid is planning on implementing protection functionality in an IEC 61850 process bus architecture. Protection scheme functionality along with operational flexibility were key considerations in the analysis. The design uses sampled value streams in an architecture which retains the overlapping zones approach of CT placement, while allowing for new functionality. The design also utilizes the IEC 61850 test mode capabilities to radically change testing procedures. The challenges and benefits of network communications, now integral to protection schemes, were explored. Some potential new operational benefits from this approach were identified.
