Critical Telecommunications Issues for Grid Control

UTC members examine obstacles to the fast, reliable communications needed for effective grid control. These obstacles come from all corners: carrier retirement of legacy services, equipment suppliers following those carriers into packet-switched networking, and business use cases that require collaboration of information and operations technologies (IT/OT convergence). Simultaneously, utilities face pressures on their wireless spectrum access, greater sharing of pole space with other companies, and ever-changing regulatory pressures. Those pressures conspire to form a challenging environment for dependable telecommunications. UTC will present experiences of member utilities in addressing these challenges, plus its own advocacy initiatives to support utilities’ telecommunications needs.
