Comparing Ride-Through Requirements For Inverter-Based Resources In Nerc Reliability Standard Prc-029 and Ieee Std 2800-2022
The proposed NERC Reliability Standard PRC-029, specifying voltage and frequency ride-through capability and performance requirements for inverter-based resources (IBRs), is going through balloting, and is expected to be approved by NERC Board of Trustees before the end of 2024. The latest draft of PRC-029 has been mostly aligned to IEEE 2800-2022 voltage and frequency ride-through specifications. The ride-through requirements for IBRs in PRC-029 and IEEE 2800 are the first of its kind in the industry, with one being a mandatory regulatory standard and other a voluntary industry standard. Even though the latest draft of PRC-029 appears to be aligned with IEEE 2800, there are some key differences that are very important. This paper details these differences and explains impacts of as such. The practicing engineers will benefit from details in this paper as industry prepares to comply with IBR ride-through requirements in a mandatory ride-through standard.
